Treacherous Fog and Black Ice

There's some downright scary weather out there in the Salt Lake Valley this morning.  Don't underestimate it.

First, a layer of dense fog extended across much of the valley floor this morning.  At 7:15AM, it was lapping up against the lower University of Utah campus, which is to the left in the image below.

As of 8 am, fog had pushed onto lower campus (at least at my office) and visibility was down to perhaps 200 or 300 meters.

In addition, treacherous black ice coats many roads and sidewalks.  In many places, that shimmer you see is a thin veneer of ice that is extremely slippery.  Some sidewalks on campus were treated when I walked to the office this morning, but others like the one below were not.  Be careful out there.

As an aside, I don't know who maintains the bus stop above, which is outside the Kennecott Building, but it is an embarrassment that those with physical challenges have been forced to traverse a snowbank for the past 2 weeks.  Leave us a shovel and we'll take care of it if you can't.

Update @ 9:05 AM:

The fog bank and associated cold pool has been sloshing back and forth across lower campus.  To access a loop, go to http://www.timecam.tv/view_cam.aspx?C=7082ACFM3174 and set the time period at the bottom of the frame to "Today."  Higher frequency would be nice, but we'll take what we can get.

    1. I was here when people where stumbling through it prior to Christmas. I could not believe it was still here when I returned this week as you would assume that a major bus stop like this would be a priority for snow removal.
